The Palgrave Handbook of Education Law for Schools

The Palgrave Handbook of Education Law for Schools
By:Karen Trimmer,Roselyn Dixon,Yvonne S. Findlay
Published on 2018-06-30 by Springer

This Handbook examines the essential nature of the law within an educational context and asks why there is not greater preparation for this aspect of a teacher’s role. Principals and teachers across the world now work in increasingly uncertain and challenging environments involving complex legislative frameworks, with their roles and responsibilities constantly changing to meet these demands: thus, it is imperative that educators adapt and acquire new skills relating to child protection and criminal law. On a daily basis, teachers and practitioners are being challenged to critically examine and evaluate the legal rights and obligations of various stakeholders, including students, parents, educators and administrators. However, if these skills are not developed, the implications will be significant: particularly so if principals are deterred from pursuing innovative education strategies due to potential litigation risks. Consequently, the chapters will empower principals and teachers in the management of these concerns. This wide-ranging handbook, including case studies from around the world, will be of interest and value to both scholars of education law and practitioners.

What Works May Hurt

What Works May Hurt
By:Yong Zhao
Published on 2018-06-29 by Teachers College Press

Medical products are required to disclose both their intended outcomes and known side effects. Educational policy and practice, however, carries no such labels. Thus, teachers, school leaders, and the public are not told, for example, that |This program helps improve your students' reading scores, but it may make them hate reading forever,| or that |School choice may improve test scores of some students, but it may lead to the collapse of American public education.| In his new book, Yong Zhao, distinguished professor and specialist in education policy, shines a light on the long-ignored phenomenon of side effects of education policies and practices, bringing a fresh and perhaps surprising perspective to evidence-based practices and policies. Identifying the adverse effects of some of the |best| educational interventions with examples from classrooms to boardrooms, the author investigates causes and offers clear recommendations. This volume will help the field of education to advance beyond the extreme pendulum swings that characterize today's school reform efforts.

The Little Book of Restorative Justice in Education

The Little Book of Restorative Justice in Education
By:Katherine Evans,Dorothy Vaandering
Published on 2016-09-20 by Simon and Schuster

Much more than a response to harm, restorative justice nurtures relational, interconnected school cultures. The wisdom embedded within its principles and practices is being welcomed at a time when exclusionary discipline and zero tolerance policies are recognized as perpetuating student apathy, disproportionality, and the school-to-prison pipeline. Relying on the wisdom of early proponents of restorative justice, the daily experiences of educators, and the authors’ extensive experience as classroom teachers and researchers, this Little Book guides the growth of restorative justice in education (RJE) into the future. Incorporating activities, stories, and examples throughout the book, three major interconnected and equally important aspects of restorative justice in education are explained and applied: creating just and equitable learning environments; building and maintaining healthy relationships; healing harm and transforming conflict. The Little Book of Restorative Justice in Education is a reference that practitioners can turn to repeatedly for clarity and consistency as they implement restorative justice in educational settings.

Videogames and Education

Videogames and Education
By:Harry J. Brown
Published on 2008-09-05 by M.E. Sharpe

Videogames challenge our notions of identity, creativity, and moral value, and provide a powerful new avenue for teaching and learning. This book is a rich and provocative guide to the role of interactive media in cultural learning. It searches for specific ways to interpret videogames in the context of human experience and in the field of humanities research. The author shows how videogames have become a powerful form of political, ethical, and religious discourse, and how they have already influenced the way we teach, learn, and create. He discusses the major trends in game design, the public controversies surrounding videogames, and the predominant critical positions in game criticism. The book speaks to all educators, scholars, and thinking persons who seek a fuller understanding of this significant and growing cultural phenomenon.

On Education

On Education
By:Immanuel Kant,Annette Churton
Published on 2003-12 by Courier Corporation

|One of the greatest problems of education,| Kant observes, |is how to unite submission to the necessary restraint with the child's capability of exercising his free will.| He explores potential solutions to this dilemma, stressing the necessity of treating children as children and not as miniature adults. His positive outlook on the effects of education include a conviction that human nature could be continually improved; to achieve this end, he advocated that pedagogy, the science of education, be raised to academic status and studied at a university level — an innovative notion for the 18th century.

The Relevance of Education

The Relevance of Education
By:Jerome Bruner
Published on 1971-01-17 by W. W. Norton & Company

|Education is in a state of crisis. It has failed to respond to changing social needs—lagging behind rather than leading.| The crisis that Jerome Bruner identifies in this volume admits of no easy solutions. But the noted American psychologist makes clear that educational reform must begin with the understanding of how a child acquires information and converts knowledge into action. Drawing on his current work on infant development, Bruner underscores the importance of formulating educational strategies that expand rather than constrict the skills of the young learner. Since education takes place under conditions imposed by a technological society, Professor Bruner maintains that it is not enough to attempt reform through minor curriculum revisions. The program that fails to set knowledge within the context of action must be replaced. And to be truly relevant to our social needs, the scope of education must be extended toward overcoming the severe handicaps faced by children from impoverished areas.

Education in Vietnam

Education in Vietnam
By:Jonathan D London
Published on 2011-01 by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies

Vietnam is a country on the move. Yet contemporary Vietnam's education system is at a crossroads. Rapid economic growth has permitted rapid increases in the scale and scope of formal schooling, but there is a prevailing sense that the current education system is inadequate to the country’s needs. Sunny assessments of Vietnam's “achievements” in the sphere of education have given way to a realization that the country lacks skilled workers. Some have even spoken of an |education crisis|. These are not abstract concerns. What is occurring in Vietnam's education system today has broad implications for the country’s social, political, economic, and cultural development. Featuring contributions from scholars and policy analysts from within and outside Vietnam, Education in Vietnam addresses key issues pertaining to the political economy of education, the provision and payment for primary and secondary education, and the development of vocational and tertiary education. The book marks an important contribution to existing understandings of Vietnam’s education system and contributes to broader understandings of social conditions and change in contemporary Vietnam.

The book is distinctive as it presents a comprehensive analysis of the reforms and transformations in the region in the last 25 years; and it focuses on institutional landscape through the evolution of the institutional types established and developed in Pre-Soviet, Soviet and Post-Soviet time. It also embraces all fifteen countries of the former USSR, and provides a comparative analysis of transformations of institutional landscape across Post-Soviet systems. Higher Education in the Era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution

Higher Education in the Era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution
By:Nancy W. Gleason
Published on 2018-06-21 by Springer

This open access collection examines how higher education responds to the demands of the automation economy and the fourth industrial revolution. Considering significant trends in how people are learning, coupled with the ways in which different higher education institutions and education stakeholders are implementing adaptations, it looks at new programs and technological advances that are changing how and why we teach and learn. The book addresses trends in liberal arts integration of STEM innovations, the changing role of libraries in the digital age, global trends in youth mobility, and the development of lifelong learning programs. This is coupled with case study assessments of the various ways China, Singapore, South Africa and Costa Rica are preparing their populations for significant shifts in labour market demands – shifts that are already underway. Offering examples of new frameworks in which collaboration between government, industry, and higher education institutions can prevent lagging behind in this fast changing environment, this book is a key read for anyone wanting to understand how the world should respond to the radical technological shifts underway on the frontline of higher education.

The Politics of Education

The Politics of Education
By:Marjorie Lamberti
Published on 2004 by Berghahn Books

Although the early history of progressive education is often associated with John Dewey in America, the author argues convincingly that the pedagogues in the elementary schools in the big cities of Imperial Germany were in the avant garde of this movement on the European Continent. Far more than a history of ideas, this study provides the first comprehensive analysis of the culture wars over the schools in Germany in the 1920s. Going up to the Nazi seizure of power, the author's narrative sheds new light on the courageous defense of the republican state by the progressive educators in the 1930s and the relationship between the traditionalists' opposition to school reform and the attraction of certain sections of the teaching profession to the Nazi movement.

Aims of Education

Aims of Education
By:Alfred North Whitehead
Published on 1967-01-01 by Simon and Schuster

The general topic of this volume is education on its intellectual side. One main idea runs through the various chapters, and it is illustrated in them from many points of view. It can be stated briefly thus: the students are alive, and the purpose of education is to stimulate and guide their self-development. It follows as a corollary from this premise, that the teachers also should be alive with living thoughts. The whole book is a protest against dead knowledge, that is to say, inert ideas. - Preface.

Five Minds for the Future
By:Howard Gardner
Published on 2009-02-01 by Harvard Business Press

We live in a time of relentless change. The only thing that?s certain is that new challenges and opportunities will emerge that are virtually unimaginable today. How can we know which skills will be required to succeed? In Five Minds for the Future, bestselling author Howard Gardner shows how we will each need to master |five minds| that the fast-paced future will demand: · The disciplined mind, to learn at least one profession, as well as the major thinking (science, math, history, etc.) behind it · The synthesizing mind, to organize the massive amounts of information and communicate effectively to others · The creating mind, to revel in unasked questions - and uncover new phenomena and insightful apt answers · The respectful mind, to appreciate the differences between human beings - and understand and work with all persons · The ethical mind, to fulfill one's responsibilities as both a worker and a citizen Without these |minds,| we risk being overwhelmed by information, unable to succeed in the workplace, and incapable of the judgment needed to thrive both personally and professionally. Complete with a substantial new introduction, Five Minds for the Future provides valuable tools for those looking ahead to the next generation of leaders - and for all of us striving to excel in a complex world. Howard Gardner—cited by Foreign Policy magazine as one of the one hundred most influential public intellectuals in the world, and a MacArthur Fellowship recipient—is the Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Peer Learning in Higher Education

Peer Learning in Higher Education
By:David Boud,Ruth Cohen,Jane Sampson
Published on 2001 by Psychology Press

In everyday life we are learning continually from each other. Whatever the situation, most of us draw on the knowledge, skills and experience of our friends and colleagues. Within any educational setting learners naturally engage in informal peer learning to make sense of their course, test their ideas and share their concerns. This book explores how educators can formalise the use of this powerful approach to learning and shows how to understand, encourage and make explicit reciprocal peer learning. It investigates how peer learning can be integrated into the design and delivery of courses in higher education, and looks at what role it can play in encouraging more effective learning. Based on the experiences of a leading team of educators, the book draws on the practical guidance of those working with formalised peerlearning, and explores: what is peer learning and how can it help students?; how to introduce and foster peer learning; ways of learning effectively; the benefits and limitations of peer learning; issues that need to be considered by teachers and students. Reciprocal peer learning is an approach to teaching and learning of growing interest in higher education today. This book considers the benefits andissues for those in higher education. It will guide educators, course developers and academic leaders to review the implications of their teaching and learning roles. With practical consideration of issues such as assessment, planning, student resistance and reduced resources, it will be valuable reading for many in higher, furtherand continuing education.

Seven Myths About Education

Seven Myths About Education
By:Daisy Christodoulou
Published on 2014-03-14 by Routledge

In this controversial new book, Daisy Christodoulou offers a thought-provoking critique of educational orthodoxy. Drawing on her recent experience of teaching in challenging schools, she shows through a wide range of examples and case studies just how much classroom practice contradicts basic scientific principles. She examines seven widely-held beliefs which are holding back pupils and teachers: - Facts prevent understanding - Teacher-led instruction is passive - The 21st century fundamentally changes everything - You can always just look it up -We should teach transferable skills - Projects and activities are the best way to learn - Teaching knowledge is indoctrination. In each accessible and engaging chapter, Christodoulou sets out the theory of each myth, considers its practical implications and shows the worrying prevalence of such practice. Then, she explains exactly why it is a myth, with reference to the principles of modern cognitive science. She builds a powerful case explaining how governments and educational organisations around the world have let down teachers and pupils by promoting and even mandating evidence-less theory and bad practice. This blisteringly incisive and urgent text is essential reading for all teachers, teacher training students, policy makers, head teachers, researchers and academics around the world.

Digital Media, Culture and Education

Digital Media, Culture and Education
By:John Potter,Julian McDougall
Published on 2017-05-02 by Springer

This book provides a critical commentary on key issues around learning in the digital age in both formal and informal educational settings. The book presents research and thinking about new dynamic literacies, porous expertise, digital making/coding/remixing, curation, storying in digital media, open learning, the networked educator and a number of related topics; it further addresses and develops the notion of a ‘third space literacies’ in contexts for learning. The book takes as its starting point the idea that an emphasis on technology and media, as part of material culture and lived experience, is much needed in the discussion of education, along with a criticality which is too often absent in the discourse around technology and learning. It constructs a narrative thread and a critical synthesis from a sociocultural account of the memes and stereotypical positions around learning, media and technology in the digital age, and will be of great interest to academics interested in the mechanics of learning and the effects of technology on the education experience. It closes with a conversation as a reflexive ‘afterword’ featuring discussion of the key issues with, amongst others, Neil Selwyn and Cathy Burnett.

Humanism and Education in Medieval and Renaissance Italy

Humanism and Education in Medieval and Renaissance Italy
By:Robert Black
Published on 2001-09-20 by Cambridge University Press

Based on the study of over 500 surviving manuscript school books, this comprehensive 2001 study of the curriculum of school education in medieval and Renaissance Italy contains some surprising conclusions. Robert Black's analysis finds that continuity and conservatism, not innovation, characterize medieval and Renaissance teaching. The study of classical texts in medieval Italian schools reached its height in the twelfth century; this was followed by a collapse in the thirteenth century, an effect on school teaching of the growth of university education. This collapse was only gradually reversed in the two centuries that followed: it was not until the later 1400s that humanists began to have a significant impact on education. Scholars of European history, of Renaissance studies, and of the history of education will find that this deeply researched and broad-ranging book challenges much inherited wisdom about education, humanism and the history of ideas.

The Palgrave Handbook of Race and the Arts in Education

The Palgrave Handbook of Race and the Arts in Education
By:Amelia M. Kraehe,Rubén Gaztambide-Fernández,B. Stephen Carpenter II
Published on 2018-07-12 by Springer

The Palgrave Handbook of Race and the Arts in Education is the first edited volume to examine how race operates in and through the arts in education. Until now, no single source has brought together such an expansive and interdisciplinary collection in exploration of the ways in which music, visual art, theater, dance, and popular culture intertwine with racist ideologies and race-making. Drawing on Critical Race Theory, contributing authors bring an international perspective to questions of racism and anti-racist interventions in the arts in education. The book’s introduction provides a guiding framework for understanding the arts as white property in schools, museums, and informal education spaces. Each section is organized thematically around historical, discursive, empirical, and personal dimensions of the arts in education. This handbook is essential reading for students, educators, artists, and researchers across the fields of visual and performing arts education, educational foundations, multicultural education, and curriculum and instruction.
