Finnish Lessons

Finnish Lessons
By:Pasi Sahlberg
Published on 2014 by Teachers College Press

“It is now time to break down the ideology of exceptionalism in the United States and other Anglo-American nations if we are to develop reforms that will truly inspire our teachers to improve learning for all our students—especially those who struggle the most. In that essential quest, Pasi Sahlberg is undoubtedly one of the very best teachers of all.” —From the Foreword by Andy Hargreaves, Lynch School of Education, Boston College Finnish Lessons is a first-hand, comprehensive account of how Finland built a world-class education system during the past three decades. The author traces the evolution of education policies in Finland and highlights how they differ from the United States and other industrialized countries. He shows how rather than relying on competition, choice, and external testing of students, education reforms in Finland focus on professionalizing teachers’ work, developing instructional leadership in schools, and enhancing trust in teachers and schools. This book details the complexity of educational change and encourages educators and policymakers to develop effective solutions for their own districts and schools.

Culture Counts

Culture Counts
By:Russell Bishop,Ted Glynn
Published on 2003 by Zed Books

Educational policies and practices in most Western countries were developed and continue to be developed within a framework of colonialism - a context of epistemological racism that is fundamentally embedded in the dominant culture. The model for addressing cultural diversity that is presented in this book is based on an indigenous Kaupapa Maori response to the dominant discourse within New Zealand. It promotes self-determination as a metaphor for power sharing and aims to advance educational outcomes and life opportunities for Maori children. The classroom is a place where young people's sense-making process (cultures) are incorporated and enhanced, where the existing knowledges of young people are seen as acceptable and official, and where the teacher seeks to co-create new knowledge with students. This analysis of the aspirations and experiences of the Maori people of New Zealand should be of interest to educators around the world who are attempting to develop culturally relevant pedagogies.

The Education Invasion

The Education Invasion
By:Joy Pullmann
Published on 2017-03-14 by Encounter Books

Most Americans had no idea what Common Core was in 2013, according to polls. But it had been creeping into schools nationwide over the previous three years, and children were feeling its effects. They cried over math homework so mystifying their parents could not help them, even in elementary school. They read motley assortments of “informational text” instead of classic literature. They dreaded the high-stakes tests, in unfamiliar formats, that were increasingly controlling their classrooms. How did this latest and most sweeping “reform” of American education come in mostly under the radar? Joy Pullmann started tugging on a thread of reports from worried parents and frustrated teachers, and it led to a big tangle of history and politics, intrigue and arrogance. She unwound it to discover how a cabal of private foundation honchos and unelected public officials cooked up a set of rules for what American children must learn in core K–12 classes, and how the Obama administration pressured states to adopt them. Thus a federalized education scheme took root, despite legal prohibitions against federal involvement in curriculum. Common Core and its testing regime were touted as “an absolute game-changer in public education,” yet the evidence so far suggests that kids are actually learning less under it. Why, then, was such a costly and disruptive agenda imposed on the nation’s schools? Who benefits? And how can citizens regain local self-governance in education, so their children’s minds will be fed a more nourishing intellectual diet and be protected from the experiments of emboldened bureaucrats? The Education Invasion offers answers and remedies.

The Social Psychology of Education

The Social Psychology of Education
By:Robert S. Feldman,Robert Stephen Feldman
Published on 1990-07-27 by Cambridge University Press

This book examines the ways in which the theory and data of social psychology can be applied to teaching, learning, and other experiences in schools. Its focus ranges in level from the individual (e.g., student attitudes and attributions), to the teacher-student interaction, to the impact of society (e.g., racial and cultural influences on school performance). The editor and distinguished contributors have two major purposes. The first is to illustrate the scope and sophistication of the emerging field known as the social psychology of education. The second is to provide solid, informed suggestions to educators for the amelioration of current educational problems. To that end, each author explicitly discusses implications for educational practice.

Social Mobility, Education and Development in Tunisia

Social Mobility, Education and Development in Tunisia
By:James Allman
Published on 1979 by Brill Archive

A revolution in education and literacy has taken place throughout the Third World within a generation. The vast majority of parents in developing nations are illiterate, while the majority of children, by the time they reach their teens, have enough formal education to assure more or less permanent literacy. To be sure, the quality of this education, the duration of the schooling experience and the equality of educational opportunity for males and females, rich and poor, urban, town and rural dwellers varies considerably from country to country. However, the fact remains that for the first time in history, formal education has become available to the majority of mankind. The consequences of this new state of affairs must surely be significant. For example, children have the means quickly to acquire more knowledge than their parents possess, which might call into question traditional relationships of respect and honor accorded to older people, based on their greater life experience and knowledge of the ways of the world. Or, as new jobs or occupational roles become available in societies, the superior education of the young might give them competitive advantage over their elders in access to new jobs, higher pay, or other means to enhance the quality of life of their families. Are these changes taking place? To date there have been very few attempts to answer this question, which makes James Allman's study of the impact of formal schooling on Tunisian youth of interest to educators and planners throughout the developing world. -- From JSTOR http://www.jstor.org/stable/218264 (May 2, 2013).
